‍

Electricity grids are critical to the energy transition.

‍

However, they must also reduce their own environmental footprint

‍

One of the industry’s challenges is the use of SF₆, a highly potent greenhouse gas, used in high-voltage equipment.

‍

The winning innovation removes SF₆ from 420 kV circuit breakers while maintaining the performance and reliability required for critical grid infrastructure.

‍

It can be integrated into existing systems without changes to operating or maintenance practices.

‍

For combining environmental improvement with proven grid performance, the ONS Innovation Award 2026 goes to Hitachi Energy for EconiQ LTA 420.

Jury’s rationale

‍

Industrial heat is one of the most difficult areas to decarbonize, particularly where high temperatures are required.

‍

The winner of the award provides a solution that produces steam up to 250°C from waste heat, seawater and ambient sources, while also providing deep cooling in the same system. This enables better use of energy that would otherwise be lost and can reduce energy use by 50–70 per cent.

‍

The technology is already demonstrated at Pelagia’s plant in Måløy, showing its potential to be applied in real industrial operations.

‍

For combining energy efficiency with industrial decarbonization, the Innovation Award Jury finds ENERIN a deserving winner of the 2026 ONS Innovation Award.

‍
