Ståle Tungesvik appointed new Chair of ONS Foundation

The ONS Foundation is proud to announce Ståle Tungesvik as the new Chair of its Board. A veteran of the energy industry with four decades of experience, Tungesvik brings deep operational insight and a forward-looking mindset to one of the world’s leading energy forums.

Tungesvik is currently Vice President for Safety and Sustainability in Equinor’s Marketing, Midstream and Processing (MMP) division, and has spent his career at the centre of major industrial and organisational shifts. Since joining Norsk Hydro in 1985 and Equinor in 1991, he has held leadership roles in drilling, operations and renewables, led Equinor’s activities in Canada, and played a key role in shaping safety and sustainability strategy across the company.

“When you move around a large organisation, you learn a lot,” he says. “I've led major operational teams, worked across regions and technologies – and always with the belief that people deliver their best when they know where they’re heading.”

With a heart that beats for ONS

Tungesvik is no stranger to ONS. Having previously served on its board, he describes the foundation as “a dynamic organisation that’s always ahead of the curve – professional, open-minded and courageous.”

“ONS has earned its place as a respected meeting place for global energy. It challenges the industry to face what’s coming, not what’s comfortable. That’s why the theme for ONS 2026, Courage, resonates so strongly with me.”

Asked about ONS’ role in a time of global instability, Tungesvik emphasises the importance of balance and dialogue.

“Yes, the pace of the energy transition may have slowed slightly, as other urgent priorities come to the forefront, like energy security, affordability, competitiveness. But in the long run, the transition is inevitable. We need to think short-term and long-term at the same time.”

He believes ONS is uniquely positioned to frame this complex debate – not with easy answers, but by asking the right questions.

“ONS has helped bring the oil and gas sector into the broader energy conversation. That’s vital, because the world will need both.”

Leif Johan Sevland, President and CEO of the ONS Foundation, welcomes Tungesvik’s appointment with enthusiasm:

“Ståle brings the experience, vision and integrity that define ONS. He understands both the realities of the energy industry and the urgency of transformation. We are fortunate to have him lead us into the next chapter.”

Looking ahead

Tungesvik takes on the role as ONS prepares for its next major event in Stavanger, Norway in 2026. With a theme of Courage, the programme will explore how industries, governments and societies can face an uncertain future with resolve and openness.

Tungesvik, for his part, seems ready:

“My heart’s in it. And I believe ONS is exactly the place to have the conversations that matter.”
