Arctic Circle – new Arctic Transportation Routes

On 11th of October,  ONS gathered 60 attendees in a breakout session at the Arctic Circle Summit in Reykjavik to discuss perspectives, legal implications, business opportunities and potential challenges related to the opening up of new Arctic transportation routes.

Invited speakers were Liv Monica Stubholt, Partner in law firm Selmer and Board Member in World Ocean Council, and Janne Valkonen, Cold Climate Advisory Services, DNV GL. Liv Monica Stubholt, reinforced that the systems for the Arctic and the way business is conducted in the Arctic region should not cause concerns.

– If everything had been as well organised as is the case for the Arctics, there would be few things keeping us up at night, Liv Monica Stubholt said.

Challenges ahead
The opening of new Arctic transportation routes do also imply challenges.

– These are responsibilities for all the players in the Arctic to solve, ranging from Government to companies, Janne Valkonen, DNV GL said.
