IEA Director Maria van der Hoeven to speak about changes at ONS 2014

The main theme of ONS 2014 is Changes – a topic that is everyday business for Maria van der Hoeven, Executive Director of the IEA. Ms van der Hoeven’s main goal is to take the lead in the transition to a secure and sustainable energy future.

Maria van der Hoeven is the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, IEA, a renowned organisation working to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for all of us. Previously, Ms. Van der Hoeven served as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Netherlands.

At ONS, Ms van der Hoeven will address the challenges in global energy governance in the face of changing worldwide requirements.

“It is a fact of life that change is the only constant, yet we humans have a remarkable ability to be lulled into complacency,” says Ms. van der Hoven.

“The energy sector provides a perfect example: in the face of rapidly growing demand and the increasingly urgent threat of climate change, we are continuing to reactively respond to the energy system as it evolves rather than proactively managing its transformation towards one that is secure, sustainable and available for all. Events like ONS 2014, with its theme of Changes, can only help to instigate the kind of radical change that is badly needed,” she adds.

Ms. Van der Hoeven is a fierce supporter of market principles, and it is her personal conviction that policy and business should work together to render energy production more efficient and cleaner – by improving energy efficiency, developing and using renewables, and producing and using energy otherwise generated in the cleanest possible and most cost-effective ways.

About the IEA
