New CCS Park at ONS 2010
ONS is currently making a dedicated effort to demonstrate how critical the treatment of CO2 is for the future production and utilisation of oil, gas and coal. At next year’s event ONS will establish a separate CCS Park at which relevant organisations will have the opportunity to demonstrate the challenges, dilemmas and potential solutions related to carbon capture and storage.

- “The global demand for energy will continue to increase for many decades. In spite of the rapid development of renewable energy sources, oil , gas and coal will continue to be the dominant energy carriers in the foreseeable future”, says ONS CEO, Kjell Ursin-Smith. “By establishing the CCS Park we will demonstrate how the global energy community can maintain and consolidate its position in terms of developing the most environmentally friendly means possible for the exploration, production, transport and utilisation of oil and gas”, says Ursin-Smith.
Major efforts are being made across much of the globe to develop CO2 treatment technologies. The EU has granted billions of Euro for the development of CO2 treatment technologies related to increasing levels of coal production in several European countries. In principle, these technologies can also be applied during the production and utilisation of gas. The CCS Park will be organised around three fundamental themes: technology, economics and politics. Various Norwegian and international institutes, companies and other relevant organisations will be invited to participate.
- “The industry, authorities, research institutes – and ONS – must succeed in positioning fossil energy sources at the interface between climate change challenges and the ever-increasing demand for energy. If the global industry is to achieve this, the treatment of CO2 will be one of the decisive factors. We are taking responsibility for demonstrating both how CO2 treatment can be part of the solution, and how organisations around the globe are working to meet an ever-increasing energy demand while continuing to minimise emissions”, says Ursin-Smith.
