Setting the scene at the ONS Conference

A presentation of chairs and moderators for the ONS Conference 2010.

may_lis_150.jpgOver the years, the ONS Conference has developed into one of the world’s leading energy meeting places. This year’s theme is Energy for more people.

"This year we will also be focusing on youth in the form of the Young Professional Company Award, a special day for young people and students, and a separate safety lunch", says conference manager, May-Lis Thorsson (pictured).

Following the opening session and the official opening by HM King Harald we will be focusing on the following topics:

  • geopolitical perspectives in response to changes in global energy supply and demand balances
  • responding to climate change and environmental issues while meeting growing energy needs
  • developing technology and stimulating innovation to access resources and improve energy efficiency  
  • the next exploration frontiers for the energy industry


Energy for more people

ConocoPhillips, and chair of the ONS Conference committee

Steinar Våge is president of ConocoPhillips Norge in Stavanger, Norway.
Mr. Våge began his career with Phillips in 1988, and until 1995 occupied various engineering positions in Norway. From 1995 to 2000, he held a number of posts at Phillips’ corporate headquarters in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

From 2000 to 2002, he served as commercial director for Phillips E & P in Stavanger. Subsequently, and until 2004, he held the position of manager, partner operations, business and commercial development at ConocoPhillips UK in Aberdeen, and later for the North Sea business unit located in Stavanger. From 2004 to 2007, he was general manager of the heavy oil Joint Ventures Petrozuata and Petrolera Ameriven in Venezuela.

Since 2007, Mr. Våge has served on the Board of the Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF) in Norway and is currently chairman. He also serves as chairman of the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) 2010 Conference programme committee.

Director, FMC Technologies

Maury Devine is a retired ExxonMobil executive and former fellow at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government (2000-2003). Prior to this, Ms. Devine held various positions at Mobil Corporation. From 1996-2000, she was president and managing director of Mobil’s Norwegian affiliate engaged in the exploration and production of oil and gas in the North and Norwegian Seas. 

Before joining Mobil in 1988, she served for 15 years in various U.S. Federal Government positions including assistant director of the White House Domestic Policy Staff, staff adviser at the American Embassy in Paris and planning and operations positions in the Drug Enforcement Administration of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Ms. Devine is currently a member of the Board of Directors at FMC Technologies, Inc. and JBT Corporation, and is vice chairman of the Board of the Norwegian multinational corporation DNV. 

The oil and gas industry – implications of a multi-polar world

Commercial director, Upstream Scandinavia, Shell Upstream International, Stavanger, Norway

Angela Cleveland has over 20 years experience in the international energy industry. She joined Shell in 1998 at Shell International Gas & Power based in London, working first with pipeline gas and then with LNG.

She has worked on numerous integrated petroleum projects in roles involving New Business Development, LNG, Strategy, Marketing, Project Management and Governance almost everywhere across the globe. From 2005-2008 she served as general manager of Gas & Power Commercial for the Sakhalin LNG Project.

Prior to joining Shell, Ms. Cleveland worked at the International Energy Agency in Paris as special adviser to the deputy executive director, and as head of the Russian Federation/CIS desk. She also held positions at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, both in Washington, DC.

In 1999, Philip Lambert set up his own advisory company - Lambert Energy Advisory Ltd, which is a business providing independent strategic and financial advice to governments, oil and gas, and electricity companies. Lambert Energy Advisory has focused on the increasing power and influence of the national oil companies. Mr. Lambert has already conducted business activities in relation to Norway, Spain, Asia, the Persian Gulf and the UK.

He has previously held posts at the London-based merchant bank Kleinwort Benson, and the Kleinwort Benson Energy Sector Investment Banking Team, where he advised many of the world’s leading oil and gas companies including Petronas, Shell, Gazprom, Repsol and Total.

Technology and innovation

Executive vice president, Kongsberg Group, Oil and Gas Technologies

Pål Helsing is responsible for Kongsberg's oil and gas activities, and is also a member of Kongsberg’s corporate management team.  Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies is a part of the Kongsberg Group which provides technology and products and services related to the surveillance, integration, analysis, simulation, quality assurance and governance of drilling and production operations.

Helsing has broad international business experience from the oil and gas industry, having worked in the UK, Australia, Brazil and the North Sea.

New exploration frontiers

General manager marketing, GE Oil & Gas, Florence, Italy

In 2004, Michael Bellamy moved to Florence in Italy to take on the role of general manager of marketing for GE’s Oil & Gas business.

Prior to joining GE, Mr. Bellamy worked at Imperial Chemical Industries and PII. In 1987 he joined Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) where he held a number of sales & marketing positions in the UK and US over a period of 13 years.  In 1999, he left ICI to join the management buy-in team at PII, the world leader in oil & gas pipeline inspection services, and formerly a part of British Gas.  At PII he held the position of marketing and business development manager. Mr. Bellamy joined GE when the company acquired PII in 2002.

Director general, Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD)


Bente Nyland was appointed director general of the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) in December 2007. She started working for the NPD as a senior geologist in 1984, and assumed her first management position in 1989. She became a member of the NPD's senior management team in 2000.

Ms. Nyland has held a number of positions on various Boards, including at NGI (Norwegian Geotechnical Institute), IFE (Institute for Energy Technology), the University Fund, and the University of Stavanger.

Safety lunch – High-Reliability Organisations

Director general, Petroleum Safety Authority Norway

Magne Ognedal was appointed director general of the newly-established Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) in 2004. The PSA is the government agency charged with overseeing safety and working environment conditions related to the petroleum activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and specified onshore facilities.

Mr. Ognedal has experience from automation of ship engine rooms, and has also lectured in this topic at the  Royal Navy Ship Automation College in Stavanger. He joined the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) in 1974 where he has held various positions. In 1980 he was appointed Director of Safety.

The Young Professional Company Award

Communications adviser, Aibel


Moa Tyborn is a communications adviser at Aibel, where she is responsible for external communications activities such as marketing and branding. Moa has been employed at Aibel since 2006, and has previously held positions both as Instrument Engineer and later as Lead Engineer.

Ms. Tyborn has an MSc in Automation & Mechatronics, specialising in technical communications, from the Chalmers University of Technology. She has also studied economics at the School of Business at Gothenburg University. She was previously an active sportswoman and has won several medals as a member of the Swedish national kayak team.

She is also a member of the ONS 2010 Conference committee where she sits as chair of the Young Professional Company Award (YPCA) sub-committee. At ONS 2008 she was one of the competitors on the Aibel team that competed for the YPCA.
