A new contribution to this year`s ONS Exhibition was the ONS Centre Court, located in Hall M close to the CCS, Renewable Energy, and Space and Energy Parks. ONS Centre Court will also be the focus of lively presentations and debates on the themes of the ONS Parks in ONS 2012.

During this year’s ONS you got the chance to see for yourself the exciting potential developing at the interface between space and energy.

”The energy sector is one of the world’s most high-tech industries”, says Brage Johansen, who is the leading light behind the Space and Energy initiative and vice president of strategy and business development at the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS).

Solutions from outer space

Space and energy technologies are similar in many ways, and the industries have more in common than most people believe.

Both share technology challenges involving issues such as automation, harsh environments, new materials, energy solutions, remote operations, integrated operations, communications and surveillance.

The steering committee behind the Space and Energy initiative is made up of skilled professionals from Statoil, Oceaneering, the Norwegian Space Centre, IRIS and ONS. The vision driving the project is the generation of new businesses, new jobs and new technologies for the benefit of both the industry and society as a whole.

Background

The first Space and Energy conference was held in Stavanger in June 2009 at Statoil’s head offices. More than 70 companies took part and speakers included representatives from ESA and JPL/NASA.

We plan to make the Space and Energy conference in Stavanger an annual event with the combined aims of consolidating the network, informing industry and the public, and inspiring young people, including all those young at heart.

“The link between space and offshore is interesting because it may lead to the development of exciting technology and new business in Norway.”

- Trond Giske, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry.
