Young Professional Company award

The Young Professional Company Award was inaugurated in 2002 and is presented to the winners of a competition linked to the ONS Conference programme.

Competition
The Conference committee wanted to involve young professionals and give them an opportunity to express their views on the future of the petroleum and energy industries. All the presentations during the inaugural year were given on the last day of the conference, but they have since been included in the conference programme itself.

Rules
The rules for participating companies include:

  • The selection of one of 4 or 5 topics related to the conference programme
  • Each company must assemble a group of young employees aged under 32
    (hence the “young professionals”).
  • The group must not comprise more than 6 persons.
  • It must include members of both sexes and an international mix is encouraged, if possible.
  • Each group will submit a proposal as to how they intend to communicate their ideas in the form of a 15-minute presentation during the conference itself.
  • The Conference committee will select the four best groups who will then take part in the competition.

Coaching

The four groups are provided with guidance and assistance in preparing their presentations, in close co-operation with the ONS Conference secretariat. A coach from the conference committee is also appointed to each of the teams to help them with advice and guidance.

A popular competition

A jury is appointed consisting of five persons who sit in the conference hall during all of the presentations. Based on a given set of criteria, the jury selects the winning ONS competition team.

Over the years, this has become a popular addition to the conference, and an excellent way for the companies to showcase both themselves and their employees.

An important factor is that the groups get the opportunity to express themselves freely and thus say what they really mean about the topic in question. It is also an excellent opportunity for the young professionals to establish industry-wide networks.
